In Memory of Lya Pfeifer (1943-2026)
Max Kade Foundation President (2003-2025)
The Max Kade Foundation mourns the loss of Lya Pfeifer. Her vision, energy, and steadfast commitment helped shape the Max Kade Foundation into a vibrant force for German-American cultural and language exchange. As President, she did far more than guide an institution, she inspired a community, cultivated understanding, and strengthened the bridges between nations and generations.
With tireless dedication, Lya Pfeifer championed the Foundation’s mission, advancing programs that opened doors for students, scholars, and artists on both sides of the Atlantic. Her leadership was defined by a rare combination of intellectual clarity and personal warmth: she listened deeply, acted decisively, and believed profoundly in the value of cultural dialogue. Under her guidance, partnerships flourished, new opportunities took root, and the Foundation’s impact reached ever wider circles. Her achievements were also recognized by the Federal Republic of Germany, for which she was awarded the Knights’ Cross of the Order of Merit.
The Foundation will remember Lya Pfeifer not only for her achievements, but for her spirit: generous, forward-looking, and unwavering in its belief that understanding between cultures enriches us all. As we carry her legacy forward, we do so with deep respect and gratitude, committed to continuing the work she so passionately advanced.
May Lya Pfeifer’s memory remains a guiding light for the Max Kade Foundation and for all who believe in the power of cultural exchange.
